They created a whole new world but with the added complications that follow revolution and reverberation from the events leading up to it still keenly felt, Hachi and the people she cares about need to find their way back to each other if they’re going to help it thrive.Hachi and Araine are separated by more than mere physical proximity – they have drifted apart emotionally after the traumatic events of the past few years. Sara is still dealing with what happened to her while Hachi is deliberately not dealing with any of it by working so hard that she barely sleeps or eats. Running a system like Sol is hard enough but when you’re a Tau-born who sparked a revolution, being Empress is that much more difficult – especially when the hatred many people have for you is, at least partially, justified.Set a year after the events of Book 2, Hachi + Araine // Falling is more focused on the complicated political and interpersonal factors that come in to play in a post-revolutionary system. With characters like Gemini, Scarlet, Darius, and KAD prominent in Hachi + Araine // Falling the reader gets to explore the complex social intricacies even more, and watch as our key characters develop through the story. Seeing events play out from not just the leaders’ point of view but from those around her as well, the story is that much richer for it.Michael G. Hurston manages to communicate the immense scope of the tasks in front of our cast of characters without losing any of the importance attributed to the individual happenings of their lives. The Dream Series is, after all, a Space Opera with all of the accompanying immensity that goes with setting a story in an incomprehensibly large environment like space. The trick, which Hurston has pulled off for the third time in this series, is to make the reader care about what is – comparatively speaking – social minutia. There might be a revolution happening, a revolt being planned, and intergalactic political games being played but the characters readers care about are navigating all of that while trying to find happiness with each other. Capturing this complex aspect of humanity is critical in stories set against such massive backgrounds, and Hurston has managed it well.A deep dive into the challenges and adventures of being a leader, the depth of emotional connection, and a gripping story to boot - Hachi + Araine// Falling is a thrilling conclusion to The Dream Series.
